I've been a comics fan pretty much all my life. I was a dedicated reader of The Comics Journal for a long time. I read Schodt's Manga Manga and dreamed of having access to the world of Japanese comics, then cried like a baby when the flood of manga started hitting US bookstores and I realized I couldn't afford to keep up with it all the Universe has a perverse sense of humor with regards to wish One of the things I love about the Liquid City books is how they expand my view of the comics world.
I read Schodt's Manga Manga and dreamed of having access to the world of Japanese comics, then cried like a baby when the flood of manga started hitting US bookstores and I realized I couldn't afford to keep up with it all the Universe has a perverse sense of humor with regards to wishes. I read Asterix and Moebius and Judge Dredd and Joann Sfarr and generally considered myself knowledgeable about the world of comics.
And then the Liquid Sky anthologies started coming out, and they were full of ridiculous amounts of good work by all these people I'd never heard of except for Lat, but lots of people have heard of Lat. I'm beginning to suspect that it's impossible for any one person to be a polymath with regards to the world of comics I suppose that's not a bad thing. The general theme of this anthology, if there is one, would appear to be "cities. It's always nice to get a glimpse of how the art has developed in other areas of the world.
The book kicks off to a very strong start with "Signs" by Miel, a silent piece in which the story is conveyed by street signs and store signage and so on. Miel's style reminds me of Peter Kuper. Very nice work! Having read the first three volumes of Liquid City out of sequence, obviously , I think this one is probably my favorite, though all are worth reading.
Dec 24, Parka rated it really liked it Shelves: comics. More pictures at parkablogs. It's a comic anthology with contributions from various Southeast Asia artists such as Sonny Liew also editor here , Straits Times artists Miel , Charlene Chua and many others. I enjoyed this better than the first volume. The storytelling felt better. Most of the stories have influence relating to South East Asia, and these are some of the better stories compared to the others where that context isn't that strong.
There are a few More pictures at parkablogs. There are a few stories that I like. Paper City from Dave Chua and Koh Hong Teng which is about funerals and the making of the burnt offerings, Nguyen Thanh Phong 's travelogue sketches which was fun to read, Sonny Liew's conspiracy story on Singapore's escaped terrorist Mas Selamat, Ivan Song 's tale set in the future where cities are submerged by sea.
It manages to capture all the fun quirks when a family travels together. Comic anthologies are hard to review because the stories are disparate.
But I think Liquid City is a good way to expose the works of these artists to the rest of the world. This book is published by Image Comics and you should be able to get it at major bookstores. Slightly better than the first volume.. But still it lacks good quality storytelling as well as graphic visuals.. Not up to the mark as the flight series. Fortunately I got to read it by borrowing it from a friend.. It's still a pass for me.
