First, determine the problem that your team needs to solve. During this step, teams may encourage open and honest communication so everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. Try guiding the initial discussion with a series of questions, which may include asking team members how they discovered the problem and how long the problem has been affecting them. Document their feedback and pay close attention to any trends or similarities in the responses.

Once the team defines the challenge and its elements, they can start working toward a productive solution.

In the next step, identify some of the actions you can take to resolve the challenge. Team members can brainstorm various ways to address the problem and record their suggestions, carefully weighing the benefits of each method. It can be helpful to generate several solutions during the brainstorming process, so encourage team members to explore various options even if everyone seems to agree on one of the first suggestions. Having multiple ideas gives teams the opportunity to try alternate solutions if necessary, or they may decide to combine several solutions into one strategic approach.

Once the team has identified some different solutions, take the time to analyze each one thoughtfully. Teams should consider how well each option addresses the issue, as well as other factors such as timeline, budget and feasibility. When evaluating each approach, come to a group consensus so all team members have the motivation to implement the solution.
